Aunt Olga, (Iola's father's sister) came out for a visit and she and I went to St. Charles, and visited Mina Pugmire and Hannah Nielsen. Mina told us things about the Esterholdt that I didn't know and was glad to hear, especially about my grandmother Sophia Christine Larsen Esterholdt. She said grandma had shady colored hair, with a few freckles over her nose. She had a pretty complexion even when she spent a lot of time outside. She looked so fresh and clean. She must have been like dad. Mina said she lived in a small 2 room house and it was kept so neat and clean. She white washed the walls. When the twins, Florence and Lawrence were born, she didn't have a doctor, just a midwife, Janie Sparks. She didn't get along very well after they were born. Later on they called in Dr. Hoover, but grandmother never improved, but steadily grew worse and died a few months later. She also said Eline Kristine Esterholdt never married, she always said she left her sweetheart in Denmark. She was a dressmaker and ran a little store in Salt Lake City. She dressed nice and was always particular as were the sisters. Aunt Olga said Eline and her sisters came up to Grandmother Sophia's funeral and they were dressed so nice it made a lasting impression on Aunt Olga. Aunt Olga said Aunt Annie was so fussy she used to make Aunt Olga get in the wood box to eat cake or anything like that so she wouldn't spill on the floor. Mina and Hannah told me a little story about dad,(Hyrum Esterholdt) which dad had never told me, maybe because it was a foolish thing to do, or maybe he was afraid some of us might do it. They said Uncle Wilford Sparks and Aunt Harriet were living in St. Charles inthe old Nielsen home, and one day a bunch of kids were playing and acting silly. Dad picked up an old pistol which hadn't worked for years and pointed it at Hannah and said, "I'm going to shoot you". He pulled the trigger and nothing happened and as he lowered the pistol he pulled harder on the trigger and the gun went off. The bullet just nippped the toe of Hannah's shoe and went on through the floor. Dad didn't know that Uncle Wilford had been working on the gun and got if fixed to shoot. They said that quieted the kids down and Dad didn't have much to say the rest of the evening. Dad always said to us kids, "It's the empty gun that kills", maybe that is why.

Peder Larsen married Kirsten Sophie Jensdatter in Frederiksberg Church, Copenhagen. Sophie Christine was born in October 6, 1847, and was baptized the 17th of that month. Her mother died 2 days after giving birth from preeclampsia. Her father died when Sophie was 3 years old. Sophie moved to live with foster parents, Lars Jensen and Bendte Marie Thygesdatter in Torilstrup. Sophie and Niels married. Prior to emigration, the family lived in three places in Copenhagen, in 1872 "Merian Street". in 1873 "Rigens Street", and in 1875 in "Balsam Street". Those streets no longer exist, but they were small houses built by King Christian IV about 1630 for people serving in the Royal Navy. It was really very small 'flats'. This residential district of Copenhagen is called "Nyboder", close to the harbor. The family left for USA via Hull, England on June 21, 1878 Copenhagen to Hull June 21, 1878 Ship: The Humber Osterholdt, Eline Christine Osterholdt, Hanna Maria Osterholdt, Niels Jensen Osterholdt, Niels Christian Osterholdt, Anna Ingeborg Osterholdt, Sofie Christine Osterholdt, Ella Marie Osterholdt, Johan Hyrum
